Jacobus Stainer in Absam, prope Oenipontum, 1665. Repaired by Ed. E. Houston on 15 February 1940. Stainer was the most important maker north of the Alps – his highly arched model, influenced by Nicolo Amati, was widely copied in the 17th and 18th centuries. Before Stradivari, his violins were the first choice of European players; Bach and Vivaldi both knew his instruments.
