Ferdinando Garimberti

Overview

Ferdinando Garimberti (1894-1982) is part of the generation that carried the Milanese workshop tradition into the twentieth century. He learned inside the circle of the Antoniazzi family, spent his early working years in the shops of Leandro Bisiach and Giuseppe Pedrazzini, and from around 1920 ran his own business in Milan. Later he taught for three seasons at the international violin making school in Cremona.

Life and work

Two names define his training: the Antoniazzi brothers of Milan, from whom he learned the trade, and Leandro Bisiach, whose workshop was the city's main training ground at the time. He also worked for Giuseppe Pedrazzini before going independent. Around 1920 he began working under his own name, combining new making with the repair and restoration of older instruments - a mixed practice that was normal in Milan then and that shaped his careful approach to wood and varnish. Between 1963 and 1966 he taught at the international violin making school in Cremona, which put him among the teachers of the post-war generation. He died in 1982.

School and style

The striking feature of his output is its evenness: models, arching and finish stay close to each other across several decades, so a Garimberti tends to look like a Garimberti whether it was made in the 1920s or the 1950s. For attribution that consistency is useful, because departures from it deserve attention.

Labels and brands

Signed labels are frequently encountered, and many instruments also carry a branded stamp. Because his workshop was productive and his hand consistent, a label by itself should never be read as proof of authorship: label, brand, model and wood should all agree with one another before any conclusion is drawn.

Instruments in the market

Violins, violas and cellos all appear in the public sales record. Collectors commonly mention one-piece backs and a varnish whose hue runs towards red-orange, though the varnish does vary. We do not publish an instrument-by-instrument list here; any individual attribution has to be made on the object itself by a specialist.

Authentication notes

Practical checks on a candidate instrument: whether the back is one piece or two, the figure and quality of the maple, the colour and texture of the varnish, and whether label and brand are consistent with each other and with the model. Because his work is unusually even, a drop in workmanship is more meaningful here than it would be for a less consistent maker.
