Pauli Merling (1894 Copenhagen – 1976). He studied with the Copenhagen maker Bojesen Petersen, then with Rudolphe Heckel in Dresden, Rummelhof Hansen in Oslo and Emil Hjorth & Sons in Copenhagen, opening his own workshop in 1921. Gold medal and diploma at The Hague in 1949. Early work is German- and French-influenced, later work follows Amati and Stradivari models. Warm, full tone with both penetration and refinement – an important Nordic concert instrument.
